Costa Rica January 2020 (Talamanca Mountains and Osa Peninsula)

Tuesday January 7, 2020 – Tuesday January 14, 2020

Speckled Tanager

I would like to invite you to join me in exploring southern Costa Rica photography opportunities in January of 2020.

We will fly into San Jose (SJO) and transfer to the Talamanca mountains in search of Resplendent Quetzals and other interesting highland specialties.  From there we will make our way down to the Osa Peninsula.  The Osa is probably Costa Rica’s wildest region with incredible biodiversity and beauty ripe with photo opportunities.   Having had our fill of tropical beauty we will then return to San Jose for our flights home.

We will be limiting this trip to four participants in order to provide the best experience for all involved.  The purpose of the trip is to produce high quality photos instead of finding every possible species in the area.  This trip is not particularly demanding physically though the climate does tend to be on the hot and humid side on the Osa Peninsula and can get fairly cool at night in the Talamanca Mountains.

The cost of this trip is $3278 per person double occupancy but if you prefer a private room, it can be arranged for an additional $580.  This cost includes all lodging, meals, guiding fees, entrance fees and transportation in Costa Rica.  Not included are your international flight, tips, snacks and souvenirs.

Some of the key species we hope to encounter during this trip include:

Black Guan, Fiery-throated Hummingbird, Volcano Hummingbird, Resplendent Quetzal, Sulphur-winged Parakeet, Torrent Tyrannulet, Black-faced Solitaire, Long-tailed Silky-Flycatcher, Large-footed Finch, Yellow-thighed Finch, Flame-throated Warbler, Black-cheeked Warbler, Collared Redstart, Flame-colored Tanager, Spangle-cheeked Tanager, Silver-throated Tanager, Slaty Flowerpiercer, Squirrel Cuckoo, White-crested Coquette, Crowned Woodnymph, Charming Hummingbird, Double-toothed Kite, Baird’s Trogon, Lesson’s Motmot, Fiery-billed Aracari, Yellow-throated Toucan, Olivaceous Piculet, Golden-naped Woodpecker, Red-crowned Woodpecker, Pale-billed Woodpecker, Yellow-headed Caracara, Laughing Falcon, Cromson-fronted Parakeet, Chestnut-backed Antbird, Golden-crowned Spadebill, Turquoise Cotinga, Blue-crowned Manakin, Orange-collared Manakin, Red-capped Manakin, Spot-crowned Euphonia, Buff-rumped Warbler, Gray-headed Tanager, Golden-hooded Tanager, Bay-headed Tanager, Speckled Tanager, Blue Dacnis, Shining Honeycreeper, Green Honeycreeper, White-tipped Sicklebill, White Hawk, Red-rumped Woodpecker, Black-striped Woodcreeper, Chiriqui Foliage-Gleaner, Yellow-billed Cotinga, Thick-billed Euphonia, Black-cheeked Ant-Tanager.

In addition to bird species we also will take advantage of any interesting plants, animals, insects or scenery that participants find interesting.  The goal is to have fun and produce beautiful images.
