Costa Rica in October
Friday October 11, 2019 - Saturday October 19, 2019
Join us this October for an excellent bird photography experience in Costa Rica. This trip will be divided between two locations which will give us the opportunity to have plenty of photography time with a variety of beautiful and exotic birds and other creatures. Our goal is not only to spend time observing the natural wonders of Costa Rica but also to bring home some beautiful images of what we encounter. The goal of this trip isn’t to tally the biggest species list though we do typically see more than 250 species of birds on a trip like this.
We will be spending the first part of the trip in the area around Arenal Volcano where we expect to encounter species like White-throated Magpie-Jay, Golden-hooded Tanager, Keel-billed Motmot, Orange-chinned Parakeet, Collared Aracari, Yellow-throated Toucan, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Green Honeycreeper, White-throated Crake, Chestnut-backed Antbird, Fasciated Tiger-Heron, a several species of colorful hummingbirds and many others. We also expect to see sloths, colorful frogs and a variety of other non-avian creatures.
From Arenal we will make our way to the Pacific coast where we will search for the region’s specialties including Turquoise-browed Motmot, American Pygmy Kingfisher, Common Black Hawk, Southern Lapwing, Scarlet Macaw, Orange-throated Manakin, Mangrove Warbler, White-whiskered Puffbird, Black-headed Trogon and more. During our stay in this area we will spend time exploring Carara National Park as well as a boat ride on the Tarcoles River where we can venture into the mangrove forest that usually yields excellent opportunities to photograph a variety of kingfisher species.
To keep things comfortable, we will be limiting the trip to four participants along with myself and a local guide. The cost of the trip is $2547/person for a shared room. For a private room there will be an additional fee of $485. This cost includes all meals, lodging, ground transportation, guide fees, entrance fees and scheduled activities. It does not include airfare to San Jose (SJO) or tips.
