Texas (Hill Country and West Texas)

This trip is best run from May through mid-June and is a popular one.  It typically starts and ends at the San Antonio airport though this trip can easily be combined with the Lower Rio Grande Valley.  If the RGV is included in the itinerary the trip typically starts in San Antonio and ends in Harlingin. 


Some of the species that we target on this trip include Golden-cheeked Warbler, Black-capped Vireo, Colima Warbler, Lucy’s Warbler, Yellow-throated Vireo, Mourning Warbler, MacGillivray’s Warbler, Varied Bunting, Painted Bunting, Indigo Bunting, Crissal Thrasher, Curve-billed Thrasher, Verdin, Cactus Wren, Canyon Wren, Rock Wren, Bewick’s Wren, Painted Redstart, Hutton’s Vireo, Gray Vireo, White-eyed Vireo, Yellow-throated Vireo, Cordilleran Flycatcher, Scott’s Oriole, Lucifer Hummingbird, Black-chinned Hummingbird, Blue-throated Hummingbird, Pyrrhuloxia, Gray Hawk, Common Black-Hawk, Zone-tailed Hawk, Western Screech-Owl, Elf Owl, Scaled Quail, Montezuma Quail, Canyon Towhee, Spotted Towhee, Black-throated Sparrow, Black-chinned Sparrow, Rufous-crowned Sparrow, Field Sparrow, Hepatic Tanager, Western Tanager, Black-headed Grosbeak, Blue Grosbeak, Yellow-breasted Chat, Black-crested Titmouse, Mexican Jay, Western Scrub-Jay, Cassin’s Kingbird, Western Kingbird, Tropical Kingbird, Green Kingfisher, Greater Roadrunner, Black-tailed Gnatcatcher, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Bushtit and others.


The standard itinerary also lends itself to optional outings to the Devil’s Sinkhole State Natural Area to view the nightly emergence of Mexican Free-tailed Bats as well as a visit to the McDonald Observatory for a star party.


The typical itinerary is for seven days, six nights and costs $1850/person double occupancy and an additional $320/person for a private room.  This fee includes all lodging during the trip as well as ground transportation, guide fees and entrance fees.  Meals, tips and optional outings to the “bat cave” and/or observatory are not included in this cost.


The trip can be run with as few as two or as many as six participants.
