When I think back on my experiences photographing birds in the tropics, there are few that can equal the amazing abundance that can be experienced in the cloudforests of Ecuador.  In July of 2024 and again in Feb 2025 I am offering a trip which should excite anyone who is interested in photographing birds in an amazingly beautiful place.

Sparkling Violetear

The main goal of this trip is to produce beautiful photos of the various birds of the area and to do so we will visit a variety of feeding stations where we can really focus on the overall scene in a relatively controlled situation.  We will also have opportunities to observe and photograph birds and other wildlife away from feeders in hopes of some of the more elusive creatures of this amazing place.

Collared Trogon

The itinerary will have us staying at one lodge for out entire visit, allowing us flexibility to take advantage of whatever opportunities present themselves in the area.  We will make day trips out to various locations to allow for a wide variety of subjects and settings without the stress of hopping from lodge to lodge.   This area is hope to over 500 species of birds including numerous species of hummingbirds and colorful tanagers.

Glistening-green Tanager

During our stay we plan to visit the world-famous Paz de Las Aves where we hope to photograph the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-rock as well as several species of elusive antpittas.  If you aren’t familiar with it you will want to be, it is truly one of the world’s crown jewels of birding.

Andean Cock-of-the-rock

This trip is intended to be moderate to low exertion.  We will be in the mountains but there shouldn’t be any particularly long hikes or steep climbs.  Most of the photography will be done near the lodge, feeder stations or car.  There will be a maximum of three photographers plus Greg Lavaty.  The trip is appropriate for photographers of all skill levels but a basic understanding of photography is helpful.  Participants are encouraged to share their knowledge and help each other to get the best results possible.  The cost of the trip is $3420 per person for a shared room; a private room is an additional $320.  This includes all ground transportation starting and ending at the Quito international airport (UIO), meals, entrance fees, lodging and guide fees.  It doesn’t not include international airfare, alcoholic beverages, souvenirs or tips.
