This trip starts out in the amazing wetlands of northern Costa Rica known as Cano Negro. We expect to have opportunities to photograph species like Green Ibis, American Pygmy Kingfisher, Northern Jacana, Nicaraguan Seedfinch along with a generous variety of other herons, egrets, kingfishers and other water-loving birds.

We will spend some of our time exploring the area by boat and some from the land. It’s not unusual to see an occasional toucan or maybe even a Jabiru. This area is generally open habitat and often offers excellent photography opportunities.

After our time in Cano Negro we will make our way to the town of La Fortuna, home of the impressive Arenal Volcano. We will stay at the famous Arenal Observatory Lodge and have time to explore the grounds including some well-maintained trails through the rain forest and some beautiful gardens full of hummingbird-attracting flowers and fruit-bearing trees that attract a variety of hummingbirds and tanagers.

While in the area we will also spend time exploring some of the habitat around the town. There are good opportunities to see sloths and a variety of birds including the cute White-throated Crake and Rufous-tailed Jacamar. This is also a great opportunity to see the beautiful Red-legged Honeycreeper and Orange-chinned Parakeet. With some luck we might even come across a White Hawk.

This trip starts and ends at the Liberia international airport (LIR)and is limited to three photographers and the guide (Greg Lavaty) in order to offer a good photography experience.

The trip is intended to be moderate to low exertion and is appropriate to photographers of all skill levels.  Participants are encouraged to share their knowledge and help one another out, making this an excellent opportunity to improve your photography skills.  

The cost of this trip is $2850 per person for a shared room, if you prefer a private toom there is an additional fee of $450.  The cost includes all transportation within Costa Rica, all lodging, entrance fees and guide fees. It does not cover international flights, meals or tips.
