Seven days through northern Costa Rica, from the foothills of Arenal Volcano to the lowland rainforest near the Nicaraguan border and the foothill forest north of San Ramón, finishing at the hummingbird feeders of Mirador Cinchona. The route crosses very different habitats, so nearly every stop adds new birds rather than repeating the last one. Each day is built around the best light: early sessions when the birds are most active, a quieter midday, and a return to the field in the afternoon.

Highlights

• Feeders and gardens at Arenal Observatory Lodge with the volcano as a backdrop

• Shy crakes and wood-rails on the Bogarín Trail

• Great Green Macaws, toucans and Great Curassow at Boca Tapada

• Blue-and-gold Tanager and a long list of foothill tanagers and hummingbirds near San Ramón

• Arm's-length hummingbirds and barbets at Mirador Cinchona
