Mexico Bird Photography: Oaxaca, from the Pacific Coast to the Pine-Oak Mountains
February 2–10, 2027
Limited to three photographers plus your guide, so everyone gets the best possible experience and plenty of personal attention.
Price: $2,850 per person (shared room)
Private room: $3,395 per person
Oaxaca has the largest bird list of any state in Mexico and a long list of regional endemics, so for bird photography the possibilities are huge. Add stunners like the Red Warbler and the Orange-breasted Bunting, and it is hard to find a better winter destination. From Oaxaca City we head down to the warm Pacific coast, climb back through the cloud forest of the Sierra Sur, and finish in the valleys and pine-oak mountains around the city. The trip moves at a relaxed pace, with time to observe and photograph the birds we find rather than chase a big species count.
Highlights
• Orange-breasted Bunting and other colorful birds of the Pacific dry forest
• A night in a small village high in the Sierra Sur, among pine-oak and cloud forest at around 8,000 feet
• Red Warbler and high-elevation hummingbirds, including the Blue-capped Hummingbird, found only in the mountains of Oaxaca and Guerrero
• Dry scrub and pine-oak forest around colonial Oaxaca City
• A relaxed pace, with time to observe and photograph rather than chase a big species count
