Late November is crane season in New Mexico. Tens of thousands of Sandhill Cranes and Snow and Ross's Geese spend the winter along the Rio Grande, and at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge they put on one of the great wildlife shows in North America. This short trip pairs the Bosque with the white gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park and finishes high in the mountains above Albuquerque at Sandia Crest, home in winter to all three species of rosy-finch.

Highlights

• Sunrise fly-outs and sunset fly-ins of Sandhill Cranes and Snow and Ross's Geese at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge

• Late-afternoon and sunrise light on the gypsum dunes of White Sands National Park

• Sandia Crest (10,678 feet), one of the few places in the US where all three species of rosy-finch can be seen together

• Juniper hills and river woodlands of the Rio Grande valley for bluebirds, Juniper Titmice and Spotted Towhees
