Every spring, songbirds that have just crossed the Gulf of Mexico make landfall on the upper Texas coast, and the small wooded sanctuaries at High Island are the first shelter many of them find. Mid-April is prime time: warblers, tanagers, grosbeaks and buntings in full breeding color, a busy rookery of Roseate Spoonbills and egrets, and nearby beaches and marshes full of shorebirds, rails and waders. From a base in Winnie we cover the High Island sanctuaries, Bolivar Flats, Jocelyn Nungaray National Wildlife Refuge (formerly Anahuac NWR) and the forests of Big Thicket National Preserve.

Highlights

• Spring migrant songbirds in full breeding color at the High Island sanctuaries

• Eye-level views of nesting Roseate Spoonbills and egrets at the Smith Oaks rookery

• Shorebirds, Reddish Egrets and Piping Plovers at Bolivar Flats

• Marsh birds from the vehicle at Jocelyn Nungaray NWR (formerly Anahuac NWR)

• Nesting Swainson's and Prothonotary Warblers in Big Thicket National Preserve
