Early June is when the Texas Hill Country and the brush country to the south are at their most colorful. The breeding birds are on territory, singing from open perches, and the photo blinds and water features at the state parks draw them in close. This trip runs from San Antonio west through the Edwards Plateau to the canyons along its southern edge, then south into the thorn scrub of the South Texas brush country, before finishing in Houston. Along the way we look for two of Texas's most sought-after breeding birds, the Black-capped Vireo and Golden-cheeked Warbler.

Highlights

• Photo blinds at South Llano River State Park, with Painted Buntings as the stars

• Black-capped Vireo and Varied Bunting at Kickapoo Cavern State Park

• Golden-cheeked Warbler in the Frio River canyon

• South Texas brush-country birds at Choke Canyon State Park

• Evening bat emergence at Kickapoo Cavern's bat cave
