The Pantanal is the largest tropical wetland in the world, and August, deep in the dry season, is the best time to photograph it. As the floodwaters shrink, fish, caimans and birds crowd into the remaining pools beside the Transpantanal Highway, and jaguars hunt along the riverbanks near Porto Jofre. We spend a week on the Transpantanal, with four boat sessions for jaguars and giant otters. An optional extension continues into the Atlantic Forest of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro states, a completely different world of tanagers, toucanets and hummingbirds found nowhere else.
